Getting ready for winter? One of the best ways to prepare your home for the chilly breeze is to care for your roof. Many people overlook surrounding trees, which tend to cause serious property damage and unwanted headaches during the season.

What are the dangers that un-maintained trees pose in roofs?

Fallen Branches

Tree branches and limbs are prone to snapping off in great winds. Even a small branch can touchdown on a shingle and rip a section of the roof off as it falls to the ground. The larger ones can poke holes into roof material and make it vulnerable to water penetration, while heavier impact can ultimately break your roof.

It’s best to check for any loose or overhanging branches and get them cleared during the fall. A rule of thumb is to allow for a 10 feet branch-free redius around your property. Dead limbs have a higher likelihood to fall, so inspect nearby trees for signs of decay and rotting.

Leaves and Pine Needles

You may have to wait out falling leaves to run its course, but be vigilant in clearing them and other debris off before the onset of winter. Otherwise, moisture can easily be trapped within pine needles and leaves that have accumulated in the roof. If left ignored, trapped moisture can slowly seep into shingles, wooden beams, and eventually warp and rot areas of your roof.

Clogged Gutters

Unless you previously had gutter guards installed by your Bay Area roofing contractor, the leaves and needles that have accumulated could get stuck within. Clogged gutters prevent proper drainage, where water spills out into your foundation rather than be directed to the downspout. The last thing you want to worry about in winter is a ruined landscape and restoration costs!

Falling Trees

What’s the worst that could happen if you skip on a pre-winter tree check-up? The most destructive would be dealing with a fallen tree that’s damaged your roof! Small and medium sized trees can wreak havoc more than you can imagine. A yearly assessment of surrounding trees can go a long way.
